2019.12.06 14:49 WrAIter [WP] A comedy about a professional sports player who gets caught in the middle of every scandal possible, but ends up completely innocent

A comedy about a professional sports player who gets caught in the middle of every scandal possible, but ends up completely innocent of any wrongdoing. Directed by: Paul Dano Written by: Peter Bogdanovich Starring: Jason Schwartzman as the professional sports player David Stern as the commissioner (with a twist) and Jason Sudeikis as the star (as his friend who he doesn't want to think about)
The Adventures of Sharkboy will be directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Daniel Handler. In the film, a professional surfing champion's life is turned upside down after he falls into a mysterious coma and is subsequently possessed by a mysterious creature. The film, which will explore the relationships between the shark and its animal friends, was written by Rob Zombie and based on the book Sharkboy: The Legend of Jason the Shark and His Long-Lost Friends by Brian Grazer. The script was described as a love letter to the character of Sharkboy; where "the true love of Jason's life is the great white shark," Zemeckis and Handler will explore him via long-forgotten footage from the 1970's. Additionally, the story will be a "classic case of the shark and its friend," where Jonah is forced to confront some familiar characters. The film will be filmed over two years at the Shark Tank.
Directed by: Noah Baumbach
Based on: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Directed by: Jason Reitman
Written by: Paul Haggis and David Letterman
Set in 1960, this film is a musical about a New York City school teacher who decides to make a change in the world of one of his students, who has a serious heart condition. Set against a backdrop of an interracial couple, a man (Milo Ventimiglia) who struggles with his love and a mother struggling with her grief, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty centers on the love and pain of children as they struggle to survive in a world that's run on drugs and violence and lies. With the help of his best friend, he struggles with the decision for he and his friend are about to meet their father, who is not who he seemed. And it's not that they are different, but both they are different, but they both are the same.
David Z. Miller (The Last Exorcism) is directing. In the film, the father (Z.M.) wants nothing more than to get back to his job. He's not a hard worker and is not in the least interested in being a father, but he is a decent person. He believes in his kids and wants exactly what his kid wants: to be loved. However, the father finds himself in the middle of a nightmare. He's being stalked by a violent demonic creature and there is nowhere that he can turn to escape it or save his daughter. The actor who is playing the father is a fantastic fit, as is the voice of the demon himself. The horror of the story will be a good fit for the director, as well as the actor and the script. It's a unique story that will leave you wondering "what would it take to get me to believe that?"
Directed by: Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg
Based on: Get Out
Directed by: Alex Witt (Maniac)
Written by: Paul D. Auster
Set in the world of '99, the story centers on a group of friends who all have to deal with growing up before the age of twenty. They're all struggling with issues of identity, dating, friendships and friendship. The film will follow the kids as they make friends, develop relationships, begin to understand their parents and ultimately form their own sense of self, the only one that matters in this world of ours. Paul D. Auster will executive produce along with his writing partner Alex Witt and they will produce the film as well.

Based on: The Purge
Directed By: Sam Raimi
Written by: Dan Trachtenberg and Michael Schur
From director Dan Trachtenberg and screenwriter Michael Schur, comes a fresh spin on a classic horror-comedy trope. Following two strangers – Jake and Alex – on a bizarre road trip, the characters embark on a violent, unpredictable journey into a mysterious world. In The Purge, Raimi and Schur introduce the most brutal and terrifying version of the classic slasher film while at the same time giving them a deeper meaning and a darkly twisted twist. This is the film that's going to make this film become a movie, and is going to bring that slasher movie back to life and make it look as cool as it

2018.11.12 13:16 Carlislegendary Wildlife – "Carey Mulligan is radiant in Paul Dano's magnificent directorial debut"

Wildlife –

Wildlife

“I feel like I need to wake up, but I don’t know what from or to.”
In the annals of film history, I’m not sure there is a more compelling character than the distressed housewife. No matter the cause, whether it’s mental illness (A Woman Under the Influence), rote existence (Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels), economic and romantic hardship (Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore), or just a pervading sense of apathy (Wanda), there’s something uniquely fascinating about watching a woman become unhinged by the pressures of society. Perhaps it’s because we (unfairly) hold them to a higher standard; wives, and by extension mothers, are expected to be the levelheaded ones, everyday superheroes capable of juggling a hundred different problems without ever cracking. But when they go off script, an air of magic arises, one of limitless narrative possibility, as if a caged bird were freed for the first time. Unfortunately, more often than not, the cage just gives way to an even bigger prison.
*Wildlife—esteemed actor Paul Dano’s assured, emotionally rich directorial debut (co-written by his longtime partner Zoe Kazan, adapted from the 1990 novel of the same name by Richard Ford)—*is about one such woman: Jeanette Brinson (Carey Mulligan), a sometime substitute teacher turned housewife who feels as if her life has passed her by. She lives with her husband, Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal), a professional golfer of sorts, and their fourteen-year-old son, Joe (Ed Oxenbould), in a quaint Montana town they’ve only called home for a couple of months. Set in 1960, the drama begins when Jerry loses his job, and with it his sense of purpose, drinking and toiling away alone in his car until one day he volunteers to help fight a wildfire raging on a nearby mountain. Jeanette, who has taken a part-time job as a swim instructor to help keep the family afloat, bristles at the idea; not only is the gig dangerous and the pay insufficient, Jerry accepts it over going back to his old job after his former employer reneges on his firing. Likewise, Joe—also working part-time—doesn’t see the appeal. Still, something calls Jerry to the mountain, and off he goes, if only for a short while, leaving the two to fend for themselves. “What kind of man leaves his wife and child in such a lonely place?” Jeanette laments.
What ensues is mostly filtered through Joe’s perspective, and Oxenbould more than holds his own alongside his more famous and acclaimed costars. Perhaps the only stock character that resonates with me on the level of the distressed housewife is a sad kid, so in a way, I was predestined to love this film and his performance. He is a quiet observer, smart but naïve, not quite capable of understanding his mother’s plight. At one point Jeanette drives Joe out to the fire so he can see it for himself, and the camera lingers on his face, eyes watering, throat clenching. “Do you like it?” she asks. “No,” is all he musters, and gets back into the car, the fire raging just beyond in what is probably the film’s most mesmerizing shot.

Wildlife
Gyllenhaal, absent for the bulk of the film, is typically solid, a classic man wrestling with pride and failed ambition. He has a soft voice I never tire of hearing, which lends him the ability to achieve a level of tenderness many leading men wish they could reach. A small but moving moment occurs when he embarks on his soul-searching journey, as he kisses Joe and tells him grown men can love each other too. Clues are given that this isn’t the first time Jerry has disengaged from life, and while he has his fair share of problems, the film never leads you to believe he’s truly abandoned his family.
But this is Jeanette’s show through and through, and to her the feeling of abandonment has been burgeoning long before Jerry decided to become a firefighter. Mulligan, in what is probably a career best performance and easily my favorite of the year, imbues her with a nervous but commanding energy, constrained by her suffocating circumstances while also ready to embrace a new stage in life—or more likely, return to a previous one. Throughout the film she makes references to her life before becoming a mother, repeatedly hinting to Joe about her discontent until it finally proves too strong to conceal. She begins a not-so-secret affair with Warren Miller (Bill Camp, kind but also intimidating), an older, wealthy veteran who owns a car dealership in town. The film reaches a fever pitch at Miller’s house, when Jeanette, dressed in a lime green “desperation dress”, drags Joe over for a dinner he clearly doesn’t want to attend. Suffice to say, she ends up unnerving her son, partly due to her drinking too much, partly due to her finally embracing the overwhelming confusion she’s experiencing. I guarantee after you watch this film, you won’t be able to get Mulligan’s “Cha cha cha” chant out of your head.
It also doesn’t hurt that the film is a looker, with Dano and DP Diego García electing to keep things spare, letting the natural beauty of Montana do the talking. Aside from a few pivotal pans and the occasional tracking shot, the camera rarely moves, preferring to hone in on facial expressions and the conflicted emotions smoldering underneath. Due to the late fall/early winter season, the color palette of the environment is fairly muted, and it helps to highlight the oppressive loneliness Jeanette feels.
We should consider ourselves lucky. Rarely do directorial debuts wind up achieving even a fraction of the depth and craftsmanship on display in Wildlife. Dano has long proven himself in front of the camera, and it seems he is poised to join the long list of actors turned quality directors. Likewise, Dano should consider himself lucky, because without a cast of this magnitude who knows how the film would have turned out. Everything comes together perfectly to create a touching portrait of a mid-century dysfunctional family, anchored by a radiant actress at the height of her powers. More domestic dramas about struggling women, please.

2018.09.13 22:08 tiMartyn Fixing the Superman Franchise

“Superman: The Man of Tomorrow” would bring Superman back to his roots. It would be inspired by the Fleisher cartoons, Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman, and the romantic tone of the original Superman comics.
If it had to be in a connected universe, it would be the first installment in a franchise leading to something like DC: The New Frontier.
The Plot
It’s 1938. Clark Kent has only been working at the Daily Planet for a few months. The city is still foreign to him. The only people he’s met are a headstrong reporter named Lois Lane and a young enthusiastic photographer named Jimmy Olsen. They receive some information from a detective, John Jones, who is later revealed to be Martian Manhunter. In Clark’s free time, he fights crime as Superman in the shadows of Metropolis.
After Clark and Lois write a series of articles involving mobsters and corrupt politicians, Clark realizes that there’s a conspiracy that leads back to millionaire Lex Luthor of Lex Corp. Lois tells him they can’t do anything about it. Metropolis knows Luthor is corrupt, but he owns most of the city. Clark realizes this is out of his jurisdiction as a reporter. It’s a job for Superman.
Corruption in Metropolis is worse than Clark thought, challenging his naivety as a kid who grew up on a farm. Dawning the costume seen in the Fleisher cartoons, Superman goes public, with the intention of spreading hope to a city in need. After foiling a plot by Toyman, a version of the character based on Superman: The Animated Series, Luthor takes notice of Metropolis’ alien hero. Although he’s paranoid of Superman’s seemingly unlimited power and mysterious origins, Luthor decides to advocate for the new “Man of Tomorrow,” a name that Lois has referred to calling him that formerly belonged to Lex. As a twist from the mythos, Lex jumps on the Superman bandwagon. He even puts out an offer to partner with Superman, to frontier a new age in Metropolis.
Of course, Superman sees through Luthor, and their first interaction is a rejection of this purposed partnership. After his visit to Lex Corp, Luthor asks to an empty room, “Is it him?” A distant, cold voice replies, confirming suspicions. It’s revealed that Lex has recovered parts of Brainiac that fell to earth after the destruction of Krypton. It promises to turn Lex into “a god in the eyes of this world,” with the power to bring down Superman.
The film would tackle issues of disillusionment, as the “American dream” was a common utopian resolution to the world’s problems at the time. In many ways, technology has taken the place of the American dream in today’s world, as it’s often unrealistically idolized.
There would be some obvious political undertones, but nothing too on the nose. I think there’s a great opportunity for a depiction of a journalist as a superhero in today’s climate of manipulative and biased press. I want “truth, justice, and the American way” to make a comeback, and actually mean something. Unlike modern day, journalism wasn’t dying in the 1930s/40s, and the industry was booming, hence why Shuster and Siegel had Clark Kent be a reporter.
By the end, the film leaves a hopeful impression, like Wonder Woman did. The takeaway would be that things like technology or the American dream or money can’t save us. Instead, Metropolis is saved by a man standing up from what’s right and what he believes in. Just as his creators intended, Superman is depicted as a better version of us.
The Cast
Clark Kent/Superman - Jonathan Groff
Groff would be able to pull off an unassuming, bumbling Clark Kent, as well as a charismatic, bold Superman. There aren’t many actors who come to mind who can balance both roles as successfully as Christopher Reeve did, but I think Groff might be able to pull it off. In Mindhunter, he plays both a boy scout known for his empathy and integrity, and an FBI agent investigating serial killer behavior, essentially a journalist interviewing criminals, trying to use his humanity as a means of connection. If you aren't sold on it, I think watching the series might at least help you to see what I mean.
Lois Lane - Alexis Bledel or Jennifer Carpenter
Both of these actresses have the charisma and strength embodied by Lois, playing against expectations of women in this setting. Bledel and Carpenter especially feel like obvious choices who could always be on the same page as Superman, and not just be some damsel in distress.
Jimmy Olsen - Thomas Mann or Louis Hynes or Caleb McLaughlin
There’s a few ways Jimmy can be portrayed, and I think any of these actors would make the character a lot of fun.
Perry White - Mandy Patinkin or Ray Wise
Patinkin might be a more realistic choice for a newspaper editor-in-chief, but Wise obviously embodies Perry White to a tee. I don’t read fan casts often, but I’m sure he’s a fan favorite for this part.
Detective Jones/Martian Manhunter - David Oyelowo or Andre Holland
In my opinion, whoever plays Martian Manhunter shouldn’t embody that word “manhunter.” It should be slightly ironic, just as the character was a gentle giant of sorts in the Justice League animated series. Instead of casting a military-type who looks like a superhero without even wearing a costume, whoever plays this role should play it against type. Oyelowo’s work in Selma and Holland’s recent portal of a detective in Castle Rock both easily qualify them for this part.
Lex Luthor - Viggo Mortensen
I haven’t seen Mortensen portray a villain, but I think he could make a really great, grounded and manipulative businessman as Lex Luthor.
Brainiac - William Fichtner or Paul McGann
I think both Fichtner and McGann have a lot more in them than what we’ve seen either of them do.
Toyman - Paul Dano or Cameron Britton
Dano’s work in Prisoners and Britton’s work in Mindhunter easily qualify them for this role as a version of Toyman inspired by Superman: The Animated Series.
Jonathan Kent - Paul Reiser
The first time I saw Reiser play a father was in Whiplash, and I think he has a certain warmth that resembles Jonathan Kent.
Martha Kent - Joan Allen
Joan also has a warmth that fits this role, and I think she would be another good, grounded presence in this kind of a story.
Jor-El - Eric Bana or Ioann Gruffudd
I know Bana shows up on every fan cast, as one character or another. I think either of these actors could easily play the scientist father-figure of Jor-El in a way we haven’t seen on screen. Whoever portrays Jor-El should bring something that contrasts whoever portrays Jonathan Kent, and Bana or Gruffudd could pull that off.

2017.10.29 16:26 autotldr TIL the 'Swiss Army Man' directors had a dummy made up of Daniel Radcliffe, assuming he didn't want to do the weird, nude, farting stunts and lay around in dirt. But he loved it so much, he insisted on doing every scene.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 70%. (I'm a bot)
"We expected laughing and cheering, but I think I heard some people literally just screaming, a very animalistic screaming," Daniel Kwan, the film's co-director, told Inverse in a recent conversation in New York.
To be fair, no one knew much about the film, which Kwan co-wrote and directed with creative partner Daniel Scheinert.
There was a curious still photo from the film in the festival guide, and a cast list - with Paul Dano, Daniel Radcliffe, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead - good enough to earn it the burden of hype from journalists and buyers.
Hank, figuring he has no better shot at escape, rides him like a Sea-Doo.Thus begins the semi-absurdist romp that makes up the film's entire second act, and regardless of how much the film's subtext or surprisingly emotional character arcs connect with an audience member, the visual flair and inventiveness on display throughout Kwan and Scheinert's debut feature is undeniable.
Given both their predilection for creating unlikely, gravity-defying images in their careers as music video directors, and the very small budget with which they had to work, the obvious choice was to shoot as many of the wild stunts and optically confounding scenes on set, rather than through CGI.And that's exactly how they approached the film's first big stunt, the scene in which Dano rides Radcliffe's rigid corpse across the ocean.
He provides Hank with fresh drinking water through an endless fountain flowing forth from his mouth -shot through an "Exorcist-type rig," Scheinert said, designed after a model was made of Raddcliffe's jaw - and then learns to fire acorns like bullets from his mouth, chop wood with his arm like an axe, and fly up through the air as if some sort of high-jumping dolphin.

ONE DEAD in London terror attack -- INSIDE Trump’s tech meeting -- JARED back to Israel -- DEMS to try to weaponize Trump's ‘mean’ comment -- BRITTANY BRAMELL to TSA -- KEVIN SHERIDAN engaged -- B’DAY: Jeff Mason

Good Monday morning. THE PRESIDENT is at the White House today, where he’ll meet with the president of Panama and then with a number of tech leaders. (Scroll down a bit if you’d like to see who from the administration and business is expected to attend.)
TERROR IN LONDON -- THE SUN -- “LONDON MOSQUE TERROR: Finsbury Park Mosque terrorist screaming ‘I’m going to kill all Muslims’ drives van into worshippers killing one and injuring ten,” by Ben Leo, Gemma Mullin, Neal Baker and Lauren Fruen: “ONE person has been killed and ten injured in a suspected terrorist attack after a hired van ploughed into Muslim worshippers leaving a mosque after late-night Ramadan prayers. The attacker – a 48-year-old white man – ran down pedestrians before being pinned down by hero bystanders and arrested by police.
“Scotland Yard has confirmed one man was pronounced dead at the scene and officers are in the process of informing his next of kin. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism, this morning said: ‘This is being treated as a terrorist attack. ‘The attack unfolded whilst a man was receiving first aid from the public at the scene, sadly, he has died. ‘Any causative link between his death and the attack will form part of our investigation. It is too early to state if his death was as a result of the attack.’ The attacker struck outside the Muslim Welfare House, close to Finsbury Park mosque, in north London as the area was busy with worshippers who had been attending Ramadan night prayers.” http://bit.ly/2sJEoPt

WE ARE STILL AT WAR -- “As U.S. Adds Troops in Afghanistan, Trump’s Strategy Remains Undefined,” by NYT’s Mark Landler and Michael Gordon: “When President Trump made his first major decision on the war in Afghanistan, he did not announce it in a nationally televised address from the White House or a speech at West Point.
“Instead, the Pentagon issued a news release late one afternoon last week confirming that the president had given the defense secretary, Jim Mattis, the authority to send several thousand additional troops to a war that, in its 16th year, engages about 8,800 American troops. Mr. Trump, who writes avidly on Twitter about war and peace in other parts of the world, said nothing about the announcement. But its effect was unmistakable: He had outsourced the decision on how to proceed militarily in Afghanistan to the Pentagon, a startling break with how former President Barack Obama and many of his predecessors handled the anguished task of sending Americans into foreign conflicts.
“The White House played down the Pentagon’s vaguely worded statement, which referred only to setting ‘troop levels’ as a stopgap measure -- a tacit admission of the administration’s internal conflicts over what to do about the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan.” http://nyti.ms/2sriOvO
-- WAPO: “Afghan war faces flurry of setbacks as new U.S. military policy nears,” by Pamela Constable and Sayed Salahuddin in Islamabad: “[C]omplicating the picture are questions about how to deal with neighboring Pakistan and balance separate fights against Afghan and foreign-based insurgents. In the latest attack Sunday morning, Taliban fighters stormed a police base in southeastern Paktia province after detonating a suicide car bomb outside. At least five members of security forces and several civilians were killed, officials said. The attack came one day after an Afghan army commando shot and wounded seven U.S. troops inside an army base in northern Balkh province.” http://wapo.st/2rGZlu9
SYRIA -- “U.S. aircraft shoots down a Syrian government jet over northern Syria, Pentagon says,” by WaPo’s Thomas Gibbons-Neff and Kareem Fahim: http://wapo.st/2sOe4Do
-- “Israel Gives Secret Aid to Syrian Rebels,” by WSJ’s Rory Jones, Noam Raydan and Suha Ma’ayeh: “Israel has been regularly supplying Syrian rebels near its border with cash as well as food, fuel and medical supplies for years, a secret engagement in the enemy country’s civil war aimed at carving out a buffer zone populated by friendly forces. The Israeli army is in regular communication with rebel groups and its assistance includes undisclosed payments to commanders that help pay salaries of fighters and buy ammunition and weapons, according to interviews with about half a dozen Syrian fighters. Israel has established a military unit that oversees the support in Syria—a country that it has been in a state of war with for decades—and set aside a specific budget for the aid.” http://on.wsj.com/2rH5ZQQ
INSIDE THE WEST WING: PLAYING FAVORITES -- “Trump demands face time with favored Cabinet heads,” by Tara Palmeri and Andrew Restuccia: “Every president has regular contact with key Cabinet members, but Trump, who remains deeply mistrustful of career agency officials, has turned the White House into a hangout for his chosen department heads. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has met with the president at least 34 times since he was confirmed in February, according to a POLITICO analysis of Trump’s interactions since taking office. ...
“Senior aides say Trump demands facetime with his appointees in part because he doesn’t trust bureaucrats who do the day-to-day work of the federal government. The president shuns them as tools of what he often refers to as the ‘deep state,’ and blames them for the frequent, unflattering news stories coming from his White House, according to two White House aides. But for Trump’s Cabinet members, proximity is a plus. Being physically present at the White House ensures that they have a say in policymaking — and serves as an indication of status with the president.” http://politi.co/2sh7lR2
LEGAL SHUFFLE -- “Kushner Is Said to Be Reconsidering His Legal Team,” by NYT’s Ben Protess Jessica Silver-Greenberg and Sharon LaFraniere: “Representatives of Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, have quietly contacted high-powered criminal lawyers about potentially representing him in the wide-ranging investigation into Russia’s influence on the 2016 election, according to three people briefed on the matter.
“Some of Mr. Kushner’s allies have raised questions about the link between his current lawyer, Jamie S. Gorelick, and Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel appointed to investigate the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, according to one of the people who spoke on condition of anonymity. Before the Justice Department named him to the special counsel post, Mr. Mueller was a law partner with Ms. Gorelick at the Washington firm of WilmerHale. ...
“‘After the appointment of our former partner Robert Mueller as special counsel, we advised Mr. Kushner to obtain the independent advice of a lawyer with appropriate experience as to whether he should continue with us as his counsel,’ the statement from Ms. Gorelick said. …
“Among the lawyers contacted, one person said, was Abbe D. Lowell, a prominent trial lawyer whose previous clients include Jack Abramoff, the powerful Republican lobbyist, in a corruption scandal that shook Washington in 2005. Mr. Lowell is currently defending Senator Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, against federal corruption charges. Mr. Lowell declined to comment.” http://nyti.ms/2ruJPNX
KUSHNER’S NEXT BIG TASK -- “Trump aides Kushner and Greenblatt to visit Israel, Palestinians this week,” by Reuters’ Steve Holland: “U.S. President Donald Trump is sending two top aides to Jerusalem and Ramallah this week to discuss potential next steps in his bid to restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, a White House official said on Sunday. Going on the trip will be White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, who is Trump’s son-in-law and husband of his daughter Ivanka Trump, and Jason Greenblatt, a top national security aide. Greenblatt will arrive in the region on Monday and Kushner on Wednesday.
“The talks follow Trump’s discussions last month with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Behind-the-scenes conversations have been taking place since the Trump trip, the White House official said. … Kushner and Greenblatt will have meetings in Jerusalem and Ramallah to hear directly from the Israeli and Palestinian leadership ‘about their priorities and potential next steps,’ the official said.” http://reut.rs/2tiT30O
DEM’S GEORGIA CATCH 22 -- “Democrats sweat the details in Georgia special election,” by Gabe Debenedetti in Sandy Springs, Georgia: “Democrats are closer than they ever could have imagined to winning a House seat in the Republican suburbs of Atlanta, and dealing a resounding blow to Donald Trump. But they’re also gripped by anxiety about what happens if they fall short Tuesday. A loss in Georgia’s special election here could leave the party demoralized, with little to show for all the furious organizing, fundraising and spending in a handful of congressional special elections in the early months of the Trump administration. As a result, Democrats are now straining to throw everything they have at Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District to push Jon Ossoff over the top against Republican Karen Handel, aiming to prove they can win the suburban districts that may pave the way to a House majority in 2018.” http://politi.co/2srqj5S
THE NEW DEM TALKING POINTS -- “Democrats use Trump ‘mean’ comment to tar GOP,” by Josh Dawsey and Seung Min Kim: “Democrats are seeking to capitalize on President Donald Trump calling the Republican health care bill ‘mean’ ahead of the Senate's vote to repeal Obamacare, seeing it as a pivotal moment in an issue that could drive the 2018 midterm elections. The comments from Trump, made privately to senators last week, were largely overshadowed by a mass shooting at a Congressional baseball practice and new developments in the special counsel’s investigation into Trump and his associates.
“But a senior Democratic aide said the party plans to revive the ‘mean’ comment part of floor speeches, press conferences and social media, and consultants said they craved the image of Trump celebrating in the Rose Garden with House members over a ‘mean’ bill that hurt poor Americans. ‘We will be weaving mean into the broader attack in a prominent way,’ the aide said.” http://politi.co/2sGAnKv
-- It’s important to note: There are just nine legislative days left before Congress breaks for the July 4 recess. Senate Republicans have still not released an Obamacare repeal bill for public review. It is crunch time for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to find a path forward for a health care bill that can pass before the break. ALSO, WE HEAR that House Republicans aren’t going to necessarily take up whatever the Senate passes. They do plan a vote on something, but it’s not yet clear what the House will be able to stomach.

-- “White House meetings add to tech’s awkward dance with Trump,” by Steven Overly: “Amazon, Google, Facebook and Lyft have all hired lobbyists with connections to Trump or his Cabinet members, as they seek to influence the administration on everything from taxes to immigration.” http://politi.co/2ruMXsV
THE JUICE …

Perez, who has two siblings born in Puerto Rico, said in a statement provided to Playbook that he believes Puerto Ricans should have the same rights as those on the mainland and that his personal view is that statehood is the best method to provide full representation in government and equal rights.

A BI-PARTISAN KUMBAYA MOMENT -- “Israel trip calms some D.C. tensions,” by Daniel Lippman: “A number of former top Trump campaign officials and prominent Democrats say that their trip last week to Israel helped them dial down the bitter partisanship of current-day Washington. Trump campaign alumni Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie, former Obama White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton, and Paul Begala were among the participants in the seven-day trip that ended Saturday. … The trip was sponsored by the American Israel Education Foundation and organized by AIPAC political director Rob Bassin; other trip-goers included Juleanna Glover, Corry Bliss, Trey Nix, Brad Todd and Jef Pollack.” With a pic of the full group in front of the Knessethttp://politi.co/2sOcEJ4
WEST COAST WATCH -- “These Democrats feel guilty for sitting out the 2016 elections, and they aren’t waiting to register voters for the midterms,” by L.A. Times’ Javier Panzer: http://lat.ms/2rH3Y7i
MEDIAWATCH: HADAS GOLD -- “Fox’s Bolling talks of a future Senate run”: “Fox News anchor Eric Bolling may have just signed a new multi-year contract, but he’s also eyeing a possible career change: A future run for Senate. For now, Bolling is secure in his job as co-host of the new show ‘The Fox News Specialists.’ But In a recent telephone interview from Fox News headquarters in New York City, Bolling said that ‘when the lights go down on the TV career’ he wants to make a primary challenge against a sitting Republican senator in the South.
“‘A lot of Republicans run as conservatives only to be elected, and we find out they’re not conservative at all,” said Bolling, who considers himself one of President Donald Trump’s longest and most loyal supporters. Bolling, who grew up in Chicago and went to college in Florida, declined to specify which state in the South he’d run, which senator he would challenge or even when it would happen (it could be ‘never’ or when his current contract runs out in three years, he said). He also denied he’s taking any concrete actions to run, including speaking with consultants -- ‘no, no, friends’ he said when asked if he’s had conversations about planning a campaign.” http://politi.co/2sO3yMf

MOVIE GUIDE
THE BFG - Roald Dahl's beloved book about a little girl who recruits a friendly giant and the Queen of England to defeat a hungry race of man-eating behemoths comes to the screen in this DreamWorks production.
CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE - A CIA assassin (Dwayne Johnson) asks a former high-school classmate (Kevin Hart), now an accountant, for his help in saving the world.
THE CONJURING 2 - Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) investigate one of the U.K.'s most notorious hauntings in this sequel.
FINDING DORY - The lovable amnesiac blue tang Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) searches for her parents off the coast of California. With the help of Nemo (Hayden Rolence) and his dad Marlin (Albert Brooks), Dory navigates the Monterey Marine Life Institute and evades predators along the way in search of her family and a place to call home.
FREE STATE OF JONES - In this historical action-drama inspired by true events, Matthew McConaughey plays a Southerner named Newt Knight who leads an armed rebellion of struggling farmers and slaves against the Confederacy in Mississippi during the American Civil War.
INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE - Roland Emmerich returns to the helm for the long awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. Fearful of another attack, the nations of Earth have teamed up against a common enemy - the extraterrestrials that brought their planet to the brink of extinction. Using recovered alien technologies, the Earth coalition is braced for another infiltration.
THE LEGEND OF TARZAN - Years after leaving the jungle and settling down with his wife Jane (Margot Robbie) in London, Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) is forced to return to the Congo in order to act as a trade representative for England. However, he soon clashes with a greedy Belgian captain (Christoph Waltz) who has sinister plans for his old home.
THE LOBSTER - This surreal, ingenious comedy is set in a world where singleness is forbidden. Colin Farrell stars as Alexander, a glum bachelor who is arrested and taken to The Hotel, where he and other single citizens are put to the test: locate a mate in 45 days, or be turned into an animal of your choosing. The Lobster (named after Alexander's animal of choice) is the critically acclaimed, English-language debut of notorious Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth). It co-stars Rachel Weisz, Léa Seydoux and John C. Reilly.
MIKE & DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES - Hard-partying brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) place an online ad to find the perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister's Hawaiian wedding.
THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS - Back in 1998, acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma turned away from his classical upbringing to create a freewheeling All-Star team of global musicians, with virtuosos on instruments as varied as the Japanese Shakuhachi flute, the Mongolian horsehead fiddle, and the Armenian aduduk. He called this handpicked group the Silk Road Ensemble. Since then, the merry band has brought its nomadic party everywhere, creating incredibly beautiful music together. Director Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom, Best of Enemies) treats us to the group's marvelous talents, rich stories and outsized personalities. An uplifting mission to connect disparate parts of the world, The Music of Strangers is a feast for the eyes, ears and spirit.
NOW YOU SEE ME 2 - One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public's adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, the illusionists resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate.
THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR - It’s been two years since Leo Barnes stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan, his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual.
THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS - This animated comedy from Illumination Entertainment asks the question: what do our pets do all day when we're not home? For the critters living in a Manhattan apartment building, the answer is: whatever they want! A terrier named Max regularly invites his friends to hang out at his place while his owner is gone, but his quiet life is upended when said owner also takes in Duke, a stray mutt whom Max instantly dislikes. Their feud eventually causes both of them to get lost in New York City, and as they work together to find their way home, they cross paths with a vicious bunny who plans to lead a group of abandoned pets on a mission of revenge against humanity.
THE SHALLOWS - It's woman vs. nature in this minimalist terror yarn where a grieving young woman's swim turns deadly when a shark comes between her and land.
SWISS ARMY MAN - Stranded on a deserted island, Hank (Paul Dano) is at his wit's end when a dead body (Daniel Radcliffe) washes ashore. He approaches the corpse and is startled when it starts to display signs of life. Hank sees this unusual corpse, whom he names "Manny," as his last opportunity to escape death. Together, they go on an epic adventure to bring Hank to the woman of his dreams. In their audacious and spectacularly inventive debut, music video directors Daniels (aka Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan) find humor but also profundity in this bizarre, fantastical premise. Swiss Army Man took home the best director prize at Sundance.
WARCRAFT - Humans and orcs clash in this film adaptation of the popular video-game series.
WEINER - Politicians these days do not have it easy — they must expect to sacrifice all privacy once they enter the brutal political arena. But the tragicomedy of disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner went well beyond that, as his outsized ambition met other outsized appetites that begat one self-inflicted fiasco after another. Filmmakers Steinberg and Kriegman were uncommonly well-positioned — insiders during Weiner's New York City mayoral battle — capturing an epic political meltdown of historic proportions. With uncanny access to the candidate, his wife Huma Abedin (Hillary Clinton's closest aide), and his wobbly campaign team, Weiner plays out like a ripping, rollicking farce.

Questions Answers
Tell us about yourself, I'm not going to ask questions...you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I've been married for 11 years and I have one daughter(8 years old). I haven't had a friend since high school, it never bothered me before but as I get older see my wife and daughter get closet and I can't help but think that I'll be pushed aside by both of them. I know that's not their intention but a daughter will always be closer to her mother. I guess what I'm saying is that it would be nice sometimes to watch the game with another guy instead of alone or call up a buddy when I need help with a reno project.
My wife is my best friend. I'm close to your age and in a similar situation, friend-wise; I've realized that it's hard for other friendships to compete with a marital one (which, having met couples who aren't friends, I'm super grateful for). The acquaintances I have made are all in relationships as well, and growing up, my parents were almost always friends with other couples. Have you met any of your wife's new friends' partners? Yeah but didn't click.
Why don't you have any friends? I don't know, but I do not do well in social gatherings. One on one is OK for me but in groups I just sit their and listen, I have been trying to start conversations in groups but every time I do some one interrupts or they don't listen.
I'll be your friend man. I read you operate machines. Like heavy equipment? Excavators? Deal.
No, it's a cap lining machine. You know the cardboard that's inside of plastic caps, I run and repair those.
Are you happy? Just the no friend thing bothers me.
When is the last time you took a vacation? Where did you go? October, we went to Florida.
what do you do for a living ? Head operator in a plastic company.
Do you have any friends through work? that is quite common... if not, why? I have coworkers I talk to, but I do not socialize outside of work with them.
Have you ever paid a homeless guy to wank you of? No but how did that work out for you?
Would you like a Christmas card? Dead serious, I'd love to send some cheer your way! Edit: added text. Just that you offered is enough to make me smile. Thank you.
Are you paul dano? Who's Paul Dano?
What are some things you are interested in? Video games, sports, cars.
If you had to choose between fighting 100 duck sized cars or 1 car-sized duck, which would you choose? JK. Baseball > Any other sport. 1 car sized duck. I like to play any sport. Mostly soccer and hockey though.
Which video games have you been playing lately? Star Wars battlefront.
Which video games are you into? I have a retro collection plus newer ones. Mostly playing fifa and battlefront.
You aren't bored of it yet? You play any steam games? If so PM your steam id and we can play some shit together. No I don't play anything on steam.
Hey maybe we can play some stuff, I play mainly CS:GO, could you pm me your steam id? Sorry meant to write that I don't play on steam. Do I need a pc for steam?
Where you live big daddy? Quebec Canada.
Who are you going to kill first? Any suggestions?
If you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to PM me :D. Thanks, that's really nice of you to offer.
Do you play pc games? Ive made most of my friends online playing pc games. No I don't play pc games.
You're just like me! Wanna be pals? 😊 Sure.
Do you put your PS4 into rest mode or shut it all the way off? Shut it off. Why?
Where do you live. Quebec, Canada.
Well Fuck you guy. OK, nice.
Sorry mang I assumed you watched south park cause who doesn't?...your not my friend buddy, I'm not your buddy guy, I'm not your guy friend... Shit, I didn't catch that. I love south park but haven't watched it in a while.
They should rename ama to pityparty. Propose it.
I play games through steam or psn quite often I'd love to play together. Although the NZL timezone can make that a little difficult sometimes... What games do you jam mate? Fifa and battlefront right now.
I'm from Montréal and I would suggest you to start to do a martial art because the sense of community you get from doing so is really good, you'll make friend, get in shape and learn alot about social interactions. Good luck out there ! I've always wanted to but it's expensive.
You don't work? Yeah but mortgage and bills.
No offense but you are kind of a bummer... I know, sorry.
Same here. I know lots of people through my wife. She's very social and has many female friends so I inevitably end up having to talk with their husbands. They're all nice guys but I never clicked with any of them. I have no desire to have a guy's night out for example. Yup.
My family including my mom immigrated to US about 20 years ago. She doesn't go to work, so she basically has no friends. My dad works, but he doesn't like to spend money, so he stays home most of the time. My dad got his siblings here so he got to socialize with them. But in general, I never saw my parents having any friends growing up (they had me when they were in their 30s) but interestingly I never saw them going psycho. Growing up I thought "friends" are a necessity, but now I looked back (I am in my 30s), seemed like my parents were doing fine without. Also as I looked back, there are "friends" I wish I've never met. But I do enjoy socializing, I do like to be able to listen and talk stories. The question I want to ask is what's your definition of "friends"? I guess I would define a friend as someone I can watch a game with or go to the park and kick around a soccer ball, or play some fifa on the ps4. Even just chilling in the backyard with a beer by the grill. Basic guy shit.
Seems like joining a soccer team can be a good idea. I have played on amateur teams, but nothing ever developed.

2014.02.19 18:55 Chill_OReilly Jake and Amir: The TV Show- My dream cast/guest stars

Since the web-series is (presumably) over, I have begun to think about who else will be in the TV show. Obviously, most of these are unrealistic and are probably too expensive, but still, let me dream, you roach.
New characters
Helms, executive producer of the show, seems almost guaranteed a spot in the show somewhere. Since they are in a new office, naturally they need a new boss. He tries to be a cool guy, but often loses his temper. Has his "cousin (former NFL QB Chad Hutchinson)"'s jersey hanging in his office. Is not actually former NFL QB Chad Hutchinson's cousin.
Gaffney Jordan, a nerdy college graduate, works at the office as a programmer. He is often the butt of Amir's jokes and is defended by Jake, much like Pat Cassels. Also, like Pat Cassels, does not have a dad.
This is my own private Reddit post and I will not be harrassed...BITCH! Billy is an editor for the website and is Jake's adversary in the office, as he is intimidated by Billy's fashion sense and ability to get girls. Billy has seen every episode of Gossip Girl. Twice.
One of the actors and writers for the website, Candice is the love interest of both Billy and Jake. Jake is constantly writing sketches in which he ends up kissing her. While acting in one of his music videos, she became John Mayer's least famous sex partner.
Jake's best friend in the office, Lawrence is a standup comedian and writer. Plays a foil to Jake's more eccentric side and is more level-headed than Jake when dealing with Amir's antics. Lawrence is a fan of underground hip-hop music and basketball, except for that blonde guy, #33 for the Celtics.
The owner of StubCorp, the company that owns the website. A rich man with a Napoleon complex, Royal is extremely insecure and constantly needs to feel better than everyone. Coincidentally, he and Amir get along swimmingly.
Characters from web-series (guest stars/cameos)
Charlie Day is good at playing crazy people. Whether it's Charlie Kelly, Dale Arbus, or Spaceman Benny, there's always some sort of insanity in his characters. LeRon is a rather crazy individual, and for a bonus point, Charlie and Amir sort of look alike. Possible scene: Amir leaves work to go play laser tag with LeRon and take the kids' juice
It only seems natural, right? Was originally considering Idris Elba, but then realized that Amir's dad has to have skinny, spindly legs, which obviously suits Don Cheadle more. This cameo appearance would also possibly be doable, since Ben Schwartz stars alongside Cheadle in House of Lies. Possible episode: Amir's dad makes a surprise visit to the office
This is a perfect fit. More than perfect, actually. Subpar. Possible episode: Amir's mom stays with Amir and visits the office and Amir embarrassed by her
Louie's reddish-brown hair matches Jake's and if you've ever seen Louie, which if you watch J&A I assume you have, you know that he is quite capable of playing a fatherly character. Possible episode: We meet Jake's family at Christmas, where Amir somehow shows up at the Hurwitz' family party
Pete Holmes seems destined to be on the show as well, since he was a guest on the podcast and now also has his own show on TBS. A great way to utilize Pete's talents would be having him show up anytime Amir names one of his strange friends. Possible scene: Bradlynn films Amir's audition tape for The Real Housewives of Atlanta
It's not Jake and Amir without them.
Shia plays Mike, a lowly intern.
